Fire Brigade Community Engagement

Community Agent Les Nicholls from Essex Fire and Rescue Service came in last week to talk to us about services that the Fire Brigade offer.

He started off by saying that the Essex Fire and Rescue Service will supply and fit smoke detectors free in Essex. These alarms are now kitchen friendly and have a 10 year guarantee. If the smoke detectors don’t last the full 10 years then the Fire service will be happy to come out and fit a new replacement. For this service please phone 03003030088. Smoke detectors for the deaf are also available. These come with a vibrator that goes under the pillow and also a light that flashes in order to wake you up in case of a fire. The phone call will be followed up by a home visit. During the home visit there will be free advice on safety matters and then the free fitting of the smoke detectors. Long term support of the smoke detectors will be included.

If you have any elderly relatives or know anyone that is disabled then the fire service offer a free oven cleaning service. 56% of fires are kitchen based so although oven cleaning may not seem like a massive matter it could be part of this statistic.

For any bed bound smokers Essex fire service offer “Mister” cabinets. “Mister” cabinets provide a blanket of mist in the event of a bed fire.

At various schools in Essex the Essex Fire and Rescue Service are now offering a Five Day “Fire Break” course for 12 students for students who may need help or have any troubles. The course include hose running, ladder climbing and breathing chamber experiences. At the end of this course the 12 students will receive an AQA award.

There is a similar five day course for the unemployed. However, this course is also followed up with five 2 hour sessions on employment support. The employment support includes CV writing and information about anti-social behavior.

There is also a five day course for troubled families which is similar to the above two courses. This course is for families that have completely broken relationships. This course includes role reversals, teamwork and then at the end of the course there is a chance for both members to write a letter to one another.

There is also fire cadets for 13-18 year olds. The fire cadets meet on Tuesday evenings 6:30pm-9:00pm.for a year. At the end of the course you will receive a BTEC qualification. There is also a chance to go on the Duke of Edinburgh course and then receive a qualification through that. Once the year is finished you can then apply for a promotion for the next year. The course starts in September so you can apply now.
